Issue 143One To Click On by JonWelcome to the new issue of Hit Exchange News! I'm going to be a busy bee in the next few weeks. I've got a lot of cool stuff that I will be involved in and will be doing a lot of work with some of my close associates in the coming days. To keep everything in order, I have started a new website called Jon Olson's Adventures in Internet Marketing. Funny name, I know. It's on my own domain name JonOlson.ca, which apparently is something everyone should do in business (register your own name in a dot com or similar extension). And I will be going into much greater detail on the fun and wacky stuff I have learned in 7 years of trying to make a living online. I hope you all check it out, and you enjoy my 'trials and tribulations'. Basically, I hope to make you laugh, make you think and most of all, avoid the pitfalls I have seen in these past 7 years. Thanks for reading this week's issue of Hit Exchange News!

The News
The HEN Top Ten results are based on traffic statistics (unique hits, traffic flow, hits delivered, traffic quality) and a touch of good old fashioned 'opinion'. The industry changes just like in the real world, so an exchange may not be on the list this week, but will be number 1 next week! Discuss this week's Top 10 list in the Net Marketing Forum! Enjoy this week's list!

Hey Jon, how come I Love Hits, Click Crazey and SWAT Traffic are never on the top 10 list? Since I own them, I feel it would be a conflict of interest to place it on any of my rankings. Deep Thoughts - Feature Articles
Deep Thoughts by Jon OlsonDon't let it go to waste! This is a huge pet peeve of mine. As well all know, running and managing a successful traffic exchange does take some work. It's not as easy as set it and forget it, unlike some of the more 'popular' business models that can be found online. And this I think really effects how long a traffic exchange stays online. Here's my beef. A new traffic exchange will launch and get a lot of support, months go by and the owner seems less interested in maintaining the program and things start to go wrong. First it's the lack of customer support, then comes the abusive sites in rotation and then before you know it, a very promising and popular traffic exchange has become another closed chapter in the traffic exchange world. My advice? Sell the program before you ruin it! I know of plenty of would-be owners that are dying to find a new business opportunity, why let such a good thing go to waste? If you have no interest in running a traffic exchange, the first question I would have is why did you start one? However the more important thing to mention is to PLEASE sell it or change ownership. These programs are not supposed to be a free ride, and it takes a lot of efforts to maintain them. Do the surfers a favor and don't ruin a good thing.

FYI by Pat Marcello
Let’s Talk Text Links! We all know the basic premise of a traffic exchange: You view my site; I'll view yours. And there are little extras. Sometimes there's a game, sometimes not. Usually banners can be added, and often, text links. How powerful can these simple little phrases be? Extremely. Why do you think Google invented AdWords? How many people do you know that are making money from AdSense? And why is TrafficSwarm so popular? Is creating a killer text link important? Heck, yes. Every bit of advertising you do is important to your business and your income. A good text link will be a keyword phrase, which is pertinent to your business. For instance, if you’re selling flowers, 'flower' would be a pertinent keyword, but it's not terribly exciting. Do some research. Go here and find keyword phrases that better describe what you do. I just went over there and plugged in 'flower.' I got not only flower, but flower online, flower send, flower Francisco san in… OK, so the last one is a little bass ackwards. But if you were a San Francisco florist, 'San Francisco Flowers' might work for you. Still, one phrase isn't enough, so pick three to five. To help you come up with great phrases, click on the word you like best in the Overture list, such as 'flower online,' you get delivery flower online, flower online order, flower online shop, and on and on. You can refine your term even further by clicking on those phrases, until you get just the one you want. Another great keyword generator is Good Keywords, a free utility that you can download at GoodKeywords.com , which allows you to search keywords and creates great keyword phrases for you, too. If I plug in flower, online, and orders, you get 'order flowers online.' OK. Not too original, but this is just illustrating the point--come up with a great phrase; get more clicks. Text links are just as valuable as your ability to show your page in rotation because text links are another way to lead people to your site. Once you have the appropriate phrases, selected, you still aren't finished. Use at least two keyword phrases in the traffic exchanges to test them. See which one gets more clicks. If they both suck, then go back and find better ones, until you find one that produces results. Then, since you also need to reach people not involved in the traffic exchange community in order to help your business grow, use the phrases that you have already tried and tested (they have already proven to be the best) in pay-per-click campaigns. Most traffic exchanges have more than just click-page advertising. Utilize all the different aspects of an exchange tactically, to get the best results. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Program Review - Ad TacticsSafelists and traffic exchanges basically got their start around the same time. Safelist marketing however was here before and had a much bigger impact into the marketing world. A few years ago, safelists were THE way to promote for free. Times have changed, but one program has remained extremely viable and a leader in the safelist marketing world. Ad Tactics was one of the first programs I joined, years ago. This was the first credit based safelist which in fact almost resembled a traffic exchange the way you viewed emails and earned points (credits) for your own mailings. While safelists have taken a back seat to other forms of advertising, this program is still a very solid option. Email still remains one of the most effective forms of advertising, and Ad Tactics has been delivering results for so long, sometimes we take it for granted.
