The Pulse of the Hit Exchange Industry!
September 28th, 2006

One To Click On by Jon

Welcome to the new issue of Hit Exchange News!

It's been another 7 days in the wonderful world of traffic exchange advertising. So far, these cool little programs have been delivering traffic to web sites for over 7 years now. Not too shabby for something that wasn't supposed to last past 2003 huh?

Yes folks, the traffic exchanges are here to stay! I can think of no other form of online advertising that helps brand your name / program and builds your network quite like traffic exchanges. Yes, I said it, the only two things you should be doing with the TE's is branding yourself and building your contact list / network. This is it's strengths, this is what they are good at!

I'm sure there will continue to be the people that say, 'TE's are a waste of time'. Or my favorite, 'no one spends any money in the traffic exchanges'. You will hear the nay-sayers but you will also here the glory stories. Here's one, just to put into perspective how amazing these programs can be...

"Surprisingly, I have gotten many referrals and several sign ups to my "high end" promotion, a Day Trading course. I say "surprisingly" because I really didn't expect much positive results for this type of program in a Traffic Exchange..."

Imagine that....Great results using a free service....

Thanks for reading this week's issue of Hit Exchange News!

The News

  • I had a major mess up this week at ILoveHits.com. About 75% of all the upgraded members in the program got a nice little email that claimed there account had been downgraded. I spent 14 hours on Tuesday getting everyone's account back to normal. If this effected you, again, I apologize very much for the troubles. Everything should be set up again *crossing fingers*...
  • Big League Hits has a new owner (and it's not me). Peter Bentzen has taken control of the 'League' which came as a surprise to me because before I left for Baltimore, I was in line to become the new owner. All is well though, congrats to Mr. Bentzen and I hope for great things to come from this transfer of ownership.
  • Special guest speaker! It's Thursday again and tonight we have Mr. Robert Puddy discussing everything you ever wanted to know about tracking your campaigns in the traffic exchanges. Be sure to join us tonight at 8 pm eastern time and join me in the voice chat room! See you there!
  • This Week's Splash Page Hall of Fame Entry is this page! I do a review of this program below, but this is just one example as to why I feel Royal Surf will be the turn around traffic exchange of 2006. Check out that splash page!

The HEN Top Ten results are based on traffic statistics (unique hits, traffic flow, hits delivered, traffic quality) and a touch of good old fashioned 'opinion'. The industry changes just like in the real world, so an exchange may not be on the list this week, but will be number 1 next week! Discuss this week's Top 10 list in the Net Marketing Forum!

Hey Jon, how come I Love Hits, Click Crazey and SWAT Traffic are never on the top 10 list? Since I own them, I feel it would be a conflict of interest to place it on any of my rankings. If you want to see how well they are performing each week, please check TestHoopla top 20 weekly ranking!

Deep Thoughts by Jon Olson

Who cares what I say?

Did you know that I get more hate mail directed at my Top 10 list than anything I have ever written about in the past 3 years of Hit Exchange News? Why is it such a hot topic each and every week? Why do some traffic exchange owners HATE me because of this list? Simple, it's my opinion!

You see, the Top 10 list is comprised of the traffic exchange I FEEL performed the best for me that week. I don't just look at numbers, I take into mind everything from number of new subscribers I received, to whether or not the owner provided any valuable updates to it's members. There is absolutely NO science to it at all, it's just my opinion on which programs I feel delivered the best results for me that week. Guess what, it won't be the same Top 10 in your campaigns because you are not Jon Olson, and you are not promoting the same things I am. My point is this, results will vary!

It's been a fun few years of running this newsletter and I wish I could share with you some of the lovely mail I have received because I did not list Top Surfer number 1 this week. It's crazy, but alas, my opinion. Honestly no 'ranking' system can ever be THE WORD in this business, simply because different people surf and promote different things. What works well for you, may not for me.

My advice? Track your own results and develop your own Top 10 list that works FOR YOU! If you are interested in learning how to track your results and develop your own Top 10 list, be sure to join me tonight in the Voice Chat Room for an evening with Robert Puddy, owner of Hits Connect!

Banner Branding

If you have ever been surfing the traffic exchanges and stumble upon a banner of mine, notice one thing: my smiling face. (I'm the chick in the pink T-shirt.)

Why, you may wonder would I want to bother adding my picture to a banner? Hmm… could it be branding? Yep. My brand is me. When you see anything about Pat Marcello, you will always see my picture, be it on my own splash pages, affiliate pages, or even banners. I want people to see my face and to remember me.

Once you have a 'presence' online, people begin to trust you. They know you're not afraid to show folks who you are and what you're doing online. Everything is above board. If you provide quality information and quality products, they'll buy from you before they buy from somebody else because people will start to feel as if they know you.

So, say you have a banner and you want to add your picture to it. How's it done?

Simple!

Find a decent picture of yourself, first and foremost. You don't have to look like a high-falutin' executive or like Jessica Simpson or Brad Pitt. You just have to look friendly, and that means a smiling picture. I've seen some that just plain scare the bejeezus outta me. Some are sad. Others look mean, though I'm sure they're lovely people once you get to know them, but if they can't even smile in the picture they want to be remembered by, what's that say for their ability to be your mentor or guide? I know I liked the smiling nuns in grammar school waaaay better than the frowning ones. They usually had rulers hiding under their habits. 

But anyway, say you have your friendly picture, but it's too large. How the heck do you get it down to banner size? Simple! Resize it.

You can do it in Windows Paint program. Open the photo and select 'Image' from the top toolbar, then, 'Stretch and Skew.' Decide about what percentage of the image would fit on a banner. If it looks about right, be sure to double-check it, anyway. Choose 'Image' again, then 'Attributes.' Be sure that your picture isn't more than 60 pixels in height, since most banners are 468 pixels wide by 60 pixels high. If the height isn’t right, go back to 'Stretch and Skew' and play around, until you get a picture of the appropriate size.

In Adobe Photoshop, it's even easier. Open your image and then select 'Image' and 'Resize.' Set the height to 60 pixels or less and it will do the rest for you, providing you keep the default setting of 'constrain properties.' Just be sure that box is checked and it’s a breeze.

A free graphic editor is IrfanView at (irfanview.com). It works much the same as Adobe Photoshop. Choose the photo, then 'Image' and 'Resize/Resample' and set the photo height to 60 and it does the rest.

Now that you have an image of the proper size, you can copy it, open the banner you want to use it with, and paste it into the appropriate place on the banner. Voila! You have a banner with your picture on it.

Of course, this works great if you make your own banners, but you can do it with affiliate program banners, too, providing you don't break the site's terms of service. If you're unsure, email the program owner and ask if it's okay to use your picture on the banner.

Try it! The more you get your face out there, the more people will come to remember who you are and the better they will trust you. Trust is really what our whole online marketing system is based on, eh? And owing to the fact that there are so many con-people out there, you want to show folks that you are one of the good guys. Keeping your face in front of the public is one way to get them to remember you. Now, teach them things and offer them great products that you've tested yourself, and you'll be raking in the bucks and making some great friends along the way.

Good luck!

Program Review - Royal Surf

I may have reviewed this program in a previous issue of H.E.N. but this is not the same program that I may have mentioned before. Royal Surf is the perfect example of how ANY program can be taken, rearranged and turned into a winner!

A brief history shows us that Royal Surf was once apro-only traffic exchange. It was on the standard LJ Script and had some decent features. However, like with most pro-only TE's, the growth was stalled. Then came it's new owner, Michael Kelly.

Michael has turned Royal Surf into a free traffic exchange now and the results have been incredible to say the least. Traffic is flowing at a very steady rate, people are joining again and the general feeling is that this program is one to watch for.

I know Mr. Kelly has got some huge things planned for this, so I'm going to go out on a limb now and say this is a 'must join' program! Royal Surf is going to do very good things in the near future.

Things That Make You Go...Hmmm? (A 'Different' Look at the Industry!)

  • Can someone please tell me what happened to the bonuses you got for being a repeat purchaser at any Logiscape program? Hmmm....
  • Do people who file PayPal complaints ever read what they are signing up for? Hmmm....
  • Oh yeah, Hockey season is starting in a week. If you do business with any Canadians, give them an extra day or two next week to respond to emails... Hmmm....
