Issue 149One To Click On by JonWelcome to the new issue of Hit Exchange News! I apologize for being a day late. I figured a late H.E.N. is better than no H.E.N. I just finished unpacking my office and setting up the computer in my new home. I spent the last 4 days, basically in net cafes and running to Home Depot to fix the 'little things' that come with home ownership. It's been a hectic week for me, but the traffic exchanges are alive and kicking. I myself had a record surfing day at I Love Hits this week and it looks like my little T.E. may break 1 million page views in a week *fingers crossed*. Enough of my chit chat though, this will be a quick and too the point issue of Hit Exchange News. I hope you enjoy the 'late' issue!

The News
The HEN Top Ten results are based on traffic statistics (unique hits, traffic flow, hits delivered, traffic quality) and a touch of good old fashioned 'opinion'. The industry changes just like in the real world, so an exchange may not be on the list this week, but will be number 1 next week! Discuss this week's Top 10 list in the Net Marketing Forum! Enjoy this week's list!

Hey Jon, how come I Love Hits, Click Crazey and SWAT Traffic are never on the top 10 list? Since I own them, I feel it would be a conflict of interest to place it on any of my rankings. Deep Thoughts - Feature Articles
Deep Thoughts by Jon OlsonThe Timer 5-4-3-2-1...Next site! When the traffic exchanges started the industry standard count down timer was at 30 seconds. Ask someone to wait 30 seconds to click on the next site these days and you are bound to hear moans and groans. Yes folks, the timer has shrunk... So do we need a 30 second timer? Do we need something like a minute perhaps? Or is the new standard of 15 seconds, a good target? Here's my take, and I know it will ruffle some feathers. I like short timers. Now I think the minimum should be 10 seconds. And no more less than that because we should be encouraging people to use traffic exchange friendly pages (ie. splash pages) in their promotions. We do not need a half a minute to view a graphic, short paragraph and a call to action. A good splash page should get your message across in 3 seconds or less. As for results, I get better results from the programs with 10, 15 and 20 second timers, rather than the older 30 second timers, so the argument for me that a longer timer is a better quality page view, doesn't stand up. Note: This is from my results only, you may get better results than me at a 30 second timer. Track your own stats to be sure! Who knows what the future of the 'timer' will be. Maybe even an exchange without a timer? Maybe a 5 minute timer? Or maybe we should keep it like it is. Say yes to 10-15-20 second timers. Say yes to results!

FYI by Pat MarcelloPreference Please? So, you surf like a gazillion sites to fill up the letters that say, "What? You're Quitting Now? Now? Just when you only need one more letter! Or, you surf a few and a cow pops up. Or that infernal tic-tac-toe game that never lets you win! Are you frustrated or a happy bocce player? Personally, I don't like games that take away from the surf experience. I don't spend my whole day surfing, so if there's a game, please make it quick. I really enjoy rounding up the cows, navigating the maze, and getting all my letters. But while others are surfing and collecting bonus credits, have you ever thought that you could win a game that gives you lots and lots of credits? There are a few. But they make you quit surfing to play, so if you hate games, be warned. Webmasterquest has the best poker game, bar none. Seriously. I play it every day for about 10 minutes, after I finish surfing. When I do that, I can easily rack up another 50 credits and sometimes, it's even better than that. I'm not advocating playing poker and forgetting surfing. You'll lose if you do that, because eventually, everyone does. Keep your poker sessions short and smart. Or, there's that cute little Raging Bull, where you can win credits for a bunch of other exchanges? I always thought that was pretty cool. I mean, how intrusive is the bull? The truth is that he's not. He comes up every 15 or 20 sites and says, "You've won!" Well, I can get behind that, can't you? Pretty cool, Mr. Bull. But the greatest of all is WebCentreSurf's trivia game. I've written about it here before, but I think it's brilliant. It's not one of those namby-pamby games that any idiot with a 4th grade education could win. You really have to think about this stuff. The great thing about it is that after 5 minutes, you could walk away with 1,000 credits. I always chicken out, though, and never got above 500. I think, 500 credits! How can I risk those? OMGoodness. But here's the thing: Game lover or game hater, you have to admit that there are contests out there that make sense. I mean, making me surf for days, just to get 30 credits. Whoopee. Show me da credits! And I'll keep coming back and playing your games, providing you keep 'em short and sweet. If other surfers see the same advantage, maybe they will, too. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pat Marcello takes mental health breaks from writing every day by playing games for a few minutes every few hours. Program Review - Traffic Exchange BusinessAs announced last week, Traffic Exchange Business has made the switch from pro to free. I like this move and think more pro only programs should follow suit if they cannot get to at least 1000 paying members. For T.E.B. the results will be better judged after a few months of this new model. For now, traffic is very slow. Even though the site got a redesign, something needs to be added to spice it up but the process is in motion. This is a start and I'm sure great things will take place in time. The main point for me, is that new members will start to join much quicker than they did when it was a pro only program. The script uses a very stable LJ backend, so you are getting all the great features you expect from the LJ Script. With added promotion, and a 'spicy touch', T.E.B. should be full steam ahead down the road.
