2 Things To Do When You Feel Like Giving Up

I want to share a story with you…

The year is 2003. I had been involved in internet marketing for a few years by then, and had my hand in everything. I was a member of MPAM (the Massive Passive Advertising Machine). I also dabbled in a program called My Passive Income. I was also involved in a few other ‘set it and forget it’ kind of programs that promised the world for only $9.97 a month. Let’s just say…I wasn’t focused at all.

And with that lack of focus, came frustration…Sound familiar?

I was making pennies but spending BIG dollars that I didn’t have. I felt like giving up and in fact, I did give up…For about 3 days.

I then got a wake up call from two guys I credit for pulling me back in and showing me the way to do it right. Rich Taylor and Robert Fortin sat me down one evening after a ‘poor me’ speech I gave them and told me to FOCUS on what I loved doing and to stop trying to be a jack of all trades.

“O.K. fine!” I said reluctantly…‘But what on earth can I offer this industry?’

They both kind of chuckled and said ‘Jon, you can offer yourself and your passion!’

The hardest thing I ever did in this business was to look at myself and everything I was doing wrong. I then stripped away all the dead wood programs that weren’t progressing me in business, I gave up the slot machine marketing way of doing things and started to focus on two things only…

I started to build my mailing list and build my brand.

I know EXACTLY what you are going through! You have tried it all. You seem to be spinning your wheels and spending loads of cash on the hope and prayer you will make some money online. Trust me, it doesn’t happen when you are all over the place, with your hand in this and your hand in that. The results come when you focus on the Two B’s…Building your list & Building your brand!

What is your passion? What keeps you up at night? What makes you work until you fall asleep at your desk? What do you love more than anything else online?

Find it! Embrace it! And speaking from experience, you will never struggle online again.

This was my game plan back in 2003…

1. I started building my mailing list!
2. I talked about my passion every chance I got (I built my brand with this blog!)

No secrets. No special downloads. No secret hand shakes.

When you feel like giving up, because you will, remember to stay focused on what you love to do and the rest will fall in place!

  1. Absolutely Jon… it’s so awesome to wake up in the morning, excited about what I do! In my 2nd year of the TE, and starting to get my head above water. There are many good things to come from Sunny Suggs and Mister Face!

  2. This is the kind of articles all of us need to read from time to time.

I recently started doing something different (precisely with my lists) and went from super cold and unreactive lists to actually getting more open rates, improving CTRs and… making money.

The only thing I changed (in my mindset) was going from “I will never send affiliate offers to make money from my subscribers” to… “I will do anything within reach to help other people out” and things just clicked.

So focusing is highly empowering and your message is full of pure, raw truth Jon!

    1. Thanks man! Appreciate the heads up. Yeah figured I needed to talk about this because sometimes I forget how close I was to giving up for good in this business. Need to remind myself what people are going through and the mindset switch needed.

  3. Another thing I think that I struggled with at the beginning was seeing others succeed when I wasn’t. Not everyone will be successful in business at the same time because there are so many different variables. Just focus on you and stay on the right path for YOU.

    1. Yup. Keeping up with the Jones’….It’s dangerous. I remember seeing some of the ‘gurus’ really build huge businesses and upset that I wasn’t reaching their level of success….I changed my thinking….Because I love what I do so much. Nothing else matters 🙂

  4. Theoretically it should be easier to succeed now as we have facebook to bring us together rather than the old style forums which were a lot more intimidating.

I know that I was put on the straight and narrow by similar situations after I found out that my high end coaching I bought in 2004 was actually just a high end scam. If you don’t lose money when you start and want to give up then you’ve been very lucky, or self delusional.

Sadly most of the people who need to read this will pass it by, and still wonder what the secret that Jon Olson and TimTech have that puts them at the top of all the affiliate contests?

    1. Keeping things very simple man. It’s a message I’ve been throwing out there for years….Build the list, build the brand. Everything else comes after. But you are right, most wont read this and just complain that it’s not fair 🙁

  5. It is true what you wrote here Jon. If one follows their passion and sticks to it, even when the going gets rough there will be a day when all will come up smelling like a rose. All in good time. All in good time. Stay that course. And don’t let anyone take you down their dirty road. Great great, inspiring blog post. I loved it. Thumbs Up Thumbs UP all the way. 🙂
