How 1 Tweet Turned Into $262.50 In Under 4 Minutes…
So yesterday I was cruising Facebook and found an interesting discussion on an owner embracing social surfing and adding chat to his surfing environment. I ‘liked’ the status update but in about 15 minutes, an owner of a small traffic exchange came and stated that ‘Social is a gimmick and people will look the other way’…
He even went as far to say that ‘he polled his members and they all told him to not put chat in surf’…It’s funny because I’m a member of his program but don’t remember being polled…Anyways I digress.
Instead of me always ranting and raving about how well social surfing works, I thought I would share a little example that happened in early December.
I was looking to sell some ‘Start Pages of the Week’ at I Love Hits and while I planned on emailing my list to let the members know, I tried something different first. I Tweeted that I had cut prices in half…So $37.50 instead of $75 and in about 4 minutes I had sold out the 7 remaining Start Pages.
Interesting. Here’s what happened…
Once I tweeted the status update, someone caught wind of it in the I Love Hits chat, there was some discussion and not only did I sell out of spaces, I did it in 4 minutes from the time I pressed ‘Tweet’.
Of course, this happened because of the RELATIONSHIPS I built with my customers. All from meeting them, hanging out with them and getting to know them (in surf chat and around the net). Sure I Love Hits may perform well but the reason I sold out in 4 minutes is because I ‘knew’ the people that were buying the Start Pages. That folks, cannot be measured in ‘return on investment numbers’ but I’ll take 262 bucks in 4 minutes…Any day!
So everyone who still thinks social doesn’t work? One tweet, 262 bucks, 4 minutes…
P.S. Special note, we are starting up a Monday night seminar series each and every week. It will be a combo of ‘T.E. Toolbox / T.E. Townhall Meetings’ but mark EVERY Monday night (at 7pm Eastern) as a must attend seminar…More info later this week…)

great example of people buying from people they like know and trust.
Keep up the good work, shame I missed the tweet
Andrew
Since I’ve been tweeting and using facebook (jan 1
), whenever I post a link in my status/tweet, I’ll notice an instant jump of 5-6 people online.
Can argue social stuff till you’re dead, but another medium to put your stuff in front of peoples eyes? Can’t argue the benefit of that.
This is 100% Absolute truth. I witnessed it, lol. Once you have done the steps of generating interest and credibility in your brand, your website easily converts.
You, Jon, have positioned yourself as an expert in the TE field and continue to provide relevant content to the TE industry as well as engage your users and build relationships. Because of this people trust you and your products, and it’s easy for them to make a purchase from you.
This post and your story is an example of how social media WORKS and why it does.
I recently installed a version of chat on my exchange, and I have made many new friends while surfing this chat. The nice thing about this chat is I can chat with other people who are surfing a different site. The drawback is that they are on a different site and not surfing my TE.
Although, I have received new members at my TE because of this chat, but I just need to figure out how to get more members surfing hummerhits as I am reluctant to use surf chats to shove my link in people’s faces!
Shawn
I’ll never get why people debunk things they’d never tried. It may not be mainstream yet, but what more evidence do folks need than Facebook drives more traffic than Google and that building relationships on Twitter leads to buyers?
Yesterday I decided to tweet out a newsletter special on my main account because I was thinking, hey, those folks are my subscribers too – shouldn’t they get special pricing?
The sale is doing DOUBLE what it did in October. 30% of people who clicked the link bought the guide. I already have two testimonials.
I also agree with what Scott says – people DO understand “here’s another place to get more buyers if you do it right”.
@Shawn – use the chat to build your personal brand, shoving your link in their face is a huge turn off.. make yourself available and make relationships, they will find you on social networks and find your link there. That traffic will be a lot higher converting and higher quality than any traffic you may get by just throwing your link out there (which likely won’t generate any traffic at all)
Jon,
Well, if you are going to give an example, it might as well be one that can stuff a surfer’s wallet!
Readers tend to take note of the “cash effect”… lol
There are as many ways to market… as there are marketers.
I encourage folks to continue using whatever works for them, but to start getting comfortable with this “social stuff”.
It’s as much a fad as cell phones!
Carl
Thanks Andrew – Ya man it was crazy. Blew me away how quick people acted from a simple Tweet.
Scott – Thanks for the comments. Yeah man, instant jump for me too as soon as I’m ‘in view’ in the social sphere.
John – bang on man, you are leading the way yourself sir, great stuff!
Shawn – You are ‘doing it’ right now. People notice the comments, I’m sure you will get clicks on your link simply because you are being seen. Keep it up!!
Carl – LOLOL Yes sir. I thought the headline would grab some attention…And it looks like it has.
Thanks Tinu – Yup, sales are always increasing the more we are out and about in the business for sure.
Jon, that’s awesome!
I think the part people don’t get is you can’t just randomly get people to follow you on Twitter and Facebook and then instantly expect results. The key thing you do, and why you are so successful, is that you build relationships with people. Once you have the relationship it doesn’t matter how you get your message out, be it email, chat in TEs, facebook posts, twitter, smoke signals… you will get results. The social media sites just give you many different ways to keep in communications to your followers. You shouldn’t limit yourself to only one or two methods of communication because you won’t reach everyone that way.
Sort of flies in the face of (a) social media doesn’t work and (b) there are no numbers to prove social media doesn’t work.
Like I’ve said before, there are many marketing tools at our disposal and every one of them has strengths and weaknesses.
The one great truth to marketing is that there is no one great truth — there are LOTS of ways to get to the same goal.
Eric – Thanks for the comments sir, much appreciated!
Phil – Yup, it’s wrong I think for anyone (myself included) to say something doesn’t work and is ‘a fad’…Hurts people that may have yet to try the tools out.
Jon,
Thanks for the encouragement and proof. I’m still getting the hang of surfing and chatting. I sure I will get better with practice. And I love your feature in I LOVE HITS that allows you to tweet every so often. It’s a nice gentle nudge in the right direction.
Nick
Thanks Nick, ya man, this isn’t the be all end all, but anytime you add ‘real people’ into the mix, good things happen. And that’s what in-surf chat is, real people…
