Issue 243 – The 2008 Year In Review
Author: Jon OlsonBefore we get into the year in review, I thought it would be good to chit chat about one of the better launches within the traffic exchange industry that happened only a few days ago. Instant Banner Creator was released this week to a roaring success and brought banners back into the forefront of traffic exchange advertising.
You see, sometimes people use these things for the wrong reasons. They are concerned about click through rates and if they make a sale from the banner. What you should be using this remarkable program for and any banner in the traffic exchanges is branding.
When I promote a banner, it’s usually got my name on it, or my logo or something that makes people think of me or my business. In the traffic exchanges, banners can be earned or purchased very easily and it’s a great way to build your name in the exchanges.
Instant Banner Creator is one of those rare product launches, something that screams of quality and will actually be used by it’s members 6 months down the road. Quite refreshing actually, especially when you consider how powerful banners can be when used properly in the traffic exchanges….
As we draw 2008 to a close, I wanted to thank each and every one of you for being a subscriber to Hit Exchange News. It’s been such a great year and I look forward to seeing what 2009 has in store.
Thank you very much for being a reader of Hit Exchange News and have a wonderful holiday season!

The Famous Hit Exchange News Top 10 (Disclaimer: These are my top performing exchanges for the past week. Alexa rankings and fancy numbers have nothing to do with how I rank my list. This is based on my results and my opinion, nothing more, nothing less.)
1. Traffic Splash
2. Dragon Surf
3. StartXChange
4. Traffic Witch
5. Free Traffic World
6. Advertising Know How
7. Easy Hits 4 U
8. Traffic Swarm
9. Traffic Era

Question: Hey Jon, how come I Love Hits, SWAT Traffic and Click Crazey are never on the top 10 list? Since I own them, I feel it would be a conflict of interest to place it on any of my rankings. (But we all know how great they are anyways lol)

Deep Thoughts – Jon’s Weekly Rambling
The 2008 Traffic Exchange Industry Year In Review
Here’s my disclaimer right here. I polled both the readers of Hit Exchange News and members of Net Marketing Forum to come up what they thought were the top news stories from 2008. If you do not agree with the findings and stories, you can always have your say here!
Let’s get started…
1. Who was your ‘traffic exchange owner of the year’? And why?
Answer: This went to Mr. Paul Kinder, owner of Traffic Splash. The reasons? Essentially everyone copies the guy LOL Paul took a dead traffic exchange, assembled a great bunch of people and made Splash one of, if not the best, traffic exchange on the net. His customer service is top notch, his surfing giveaways have been copied by dozens of exchanges, and his program delivers results. What made him owner of the year? Ask his members, and you’ll see why.
2. What was the best new traffic exchange launched this year?
Answer: Traffic Era wins this award for creating something the traffic exchange industry never saw coming. The word ‘clock’ has new meaning thanks to Era. Sure, there is debates about how it was launched and if they have ever maximized their potential with it, but no other traffic exchange this year made other owners wonder what else could they do with their exchange.
3. Your top performing traffic exchange of 2008?
Answer: I don’t like giving ties usually but in this case, it’s too close to call. Traffic Splash and Dragon Surf share the honor in this award. Lots of other exchanges had their moments of glory, but week in and week out, nothing seemed to perform better than the Dragon and the Dolphin. When you break it all down though, it’s as simple as this…Great owners, create great traffic exchanges!
4. Strangest decision made by a traffic exchange in 2008?
Answer: I’m sure to get hate mail and some lovely jabs at me but don’t hate the messenger, read the forum and you will see that Hit Safari changing from a TCN script to an LJ Script was the strangest decision made this year in the industry. Let me say this, Hit Safari has been one of my best performing traffic exchanges since it started years ago, it’s always been a winner. But when they changed scripts, it seemed like results fell, numbers went down and surfing isn’t what it used to be. The age old saying, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, has merit here.
5. Best new feature(s) added to any traffic exchange?
Answer: I would love to say it was the Profile Pages at I Love Hits but truth be told it was the Super Surf script that did so much for the traffic exchange industry and surfers. It was created to give surfers bonuses for surfing all 5 Super Surf traffic exchanges at the same time, but ended up being a massive funnel for outside people to get their first taste of traffic exchange advertising. Since it’s inception, Super Surf has brought in thousands upon thousands of new surfers to the traffic exchanges as it gets the like of Jeff Dedrick, Calvin Woon, Ewen Chia and other big name marketers, telling their members how to properly use traffic exchanges. And this is only the beginning…
6. Best traffic exchange related service?
Answer: Ahhh finally, an idea I came up with along with Mr. Kinder LOL. The Surfer’s Choice / Affiliate Funnel wins this award. Not only has the Surfer’s Choice put the power of ranking the traffic exchanges to the members, the 3 weekly seminars are the most attended and information packed sessions online. It’s all about the community at A.F. and when you have people voting every week for their favorite traffic exchanges and then learning how to market with them in the training sessions, you get a very powerful group of surfers. Like my good friend Tony Tezak always says, ‘Power to the surfers!’

Things That Make You Go Hmmm…
- Free Traffic World, the best traffic exchange that you may not have joined in 2008?
- Rant of the year for me…People filing ‘unauthorized claims’ at Pay Pal for subscriptions that they start. Here’s a tip, don’t sign up for something you do not want to get billed for.
- Tim Linden you make good scripts! This thing has added over a hundred new followers to my Twitter account…

Good list of things going on for the past 366 days. There were a lot of things that happened in 2008 to be sure, but I would say that your list hits most of the high notes Jon.
If I could put in one more category in the mix I’d like to:
Best new traffic exchange owner of the year.
That would have to go to Sunny Suggs. Day in and day out she is proving to her members that she has what it takes to move her exchange along, network, and turn it into a winner. Great job, Sunny!
Yes, that twitter thing has really taken off! I was hoping to get maybe 30? But now 150…
While I don’t agree with all of the votes on the The 2008 Traffic Exchange Industry Year In Review. I still believe that Paul Kinder is the man this year.
I am glad that Instant Banner Creator is getting such a warm response. It is tiring looking at the bad (Homemade) banners of the past. Thumbs Up to Soren Jordansen and John Merrick.
Overall this was a great read and a tribute to a great year.
Yeah that twitter thing a ma jig sure hit a home run.
Michael I agree with you. Gold Star for the day for Sunny Suggs for the job she has been doing at Bootscootin. Her customer service has been excellent. Paul raised the ladder for the standard of customer service over at Traffic Splash but Sunny, David at Taxis and others have stepped up to the mark.
I look for 2009 to be a record year for traffic exchanges.
Thanks
Bo Tipton

Hi Jon.
The 2008 Traffic Exchange Industry Year in Review is a great way to give the newer people using traffic exchanges a platform for TE’s to shine.
Getting different perspectives is always an awesome treat.
Looking forward to 2009 and all of what the traffic exchange industry will be bringing us.
Have a great holiday season.
Jimmy Adames
Yup, I agree. Sunny is one of the shining stars this year. She took advice and acted on it every single day. Great job to her!!!
[...] the House 21st Century Health Care Caucus and worked closely with Kennedy to build bipartisan Issue 243 – The 2008 Year In Review – hitexchangenews.com 12/18/2008 Before we get into the year in review, I thought it would be good [...]
2008 could easily be designated as year of great TE launches! Kudos to those mentioned above plus several awesome new players not mentioned including Volcano’s. It should be added, kudos to the existing TE owners who have reached-out to help aspiring new owners (new competition) instead of selfishly protecting their own turf.
2008 raised the bar on eye grabbing graphics for TE’s
Man of the Year Paul Kinder should be proud of the fact that he (Splash) has been the one to “borrow” ideas from. Many kudos to the man who came from nowhere to be a true visionary, leader and inspiration for the whole industry.
2008 could also be designated as the year of new mods for TE’s.
Great job in 2008 guys and gals!
Hmmm, how can 2009 possibly top 2008 for industry progress?
Best of Holidays greetings to all
Max (Cool Cat)
Dear Jon,
For the most part you give some good info. but the comment about hitsafari is a brain fart if I ever heard one. As a surfer I love to surf hitsafari when it was a TCN script but I like it even better now. Both scripts are very good but the new one has a bit better from a surfer point of view.
thanks
warren
I would also like to Congratulate Brett Phillips on purchasing my Traffic exchange. I had alot of offers from some well known people (internet Marketers, Traffic Exchange Owners and novices) many of which offered me more money but when Brett told me he wanted to get back into the business I made him a offer he couldn’t refuse because out of everyone interested I felt he would be the one most likely to take it to the next level and be the exchange to watch in 2009. I hated to give up my dream but I’m too ill to keep running it. I considered taking on a partner but I need completely out of owning a traffic exchange. I need to concentrate on me for a change and not have to worry about my traffic exchange. The first year was a breeze because I was stronger then but too much has happened.
I am honored that Brett wanted to own my former exchange. Brett has been a great friend for years and a huge supporter of Traffic Heroes. He will be able to run it without bothering me like some one else that bought it would. Plus along with Dan Moses, Steve Ayling and Ryan Hogan he is one of the 4 people in this business that I trust more then any one else and are proud to call friends.
Rich Morris
Former Owner
Traffic Heroes
Wow, ya’ll.. thank you so much! but.. I’d be nowhere without the help of Jon, Robert, Paul, Soren,John Marks, Paul Conway… just to name a few. I’m really loving this business… thanks for lettin me be a part of it!
Warren, yup must be look at all those same brain farts in NMF.
I am coming up on my first anniversary of being in the traffic exchange world and I have to say you all inspire me everyday. Even tho I don’t get to surf all the exchanges consistently (time to start buying credits) I am proud to be associated with you all and absolutely LOVE AF. 2008 was an incredible learning curve for me and 2009 will be undoubtedly even better. Keep up the great work and know that your members appreciate all the new ideas you have and all the hard work you each put in to make your exchanges better and better. You all ROCK!!!
wow! thank you, I’m just catching up on things after being ill for a few days and this is definitely a great read to come back to
Just shows what a great team we got at Traffic-Splash and throughout our biz and what superb customers we’ve got
I told Splashers I’m useless this morning, maybe rumours of my demise were exaggerated after all
Nice round up of the year Jon and congratulations Paul for your support.
I just wanted to thank all the 180,000 members of CASHCLICKING.COM for their support this year which has been difficult and announce that the Cashclicking.com site is being taken over by a hosting company.
They will be able to deal with all the server exploitation problems we have been having and give it sufficient clustered bandwidth to allow it to grow properly.
It will also enable me to continue improving my Clicksmatrix.com site
So congratulations for you great customer support Paul, you deserve it.
Stephen.
That script by Tim is excellent.
