Issue 260 – Goodbye To A Legend, MPAM Will Be Missed

Author: Jon Olson

All good things come to and end, and after almost a decade of being online, the granddaddy of all downline builders has closed it doors.

Today I wanted to salute not only the legacy of MPAM but also it’s owner, Micheal Russell. The ‘Massive Passive Advertising Machine’ was the basis for everything I know online. Back in 2001 and 2002 this was THE program of choice for thousands upon thousands of marketers.

MPAM’s traffic exchange training system was one of the best ever and it’s community atmosphere was the breeding ground of some life long relationships and business dealings. This was due to Mr. Russell’s huge heart. The guy loved working with people and is the guy who gave me my first ’shot’ at this business.

It’s sad to see MPAM go, just because of the history it has but if you take a look around, you will see shades of it’s influence everywhere. In fact, my program Affiliate Funnel has quite a few MPAM touches in it as do a lot of what I own or co own online.

Micheal, thank you again for all the help over the years and for creating the MPAM community. It’s been a great ride. Let’s see what will come next of MPAM’s massive influence…

Thank you very much for being a reader of Hit Exchange News and have a wonderful week!

Question: Hey Jon, how come I Love Hits and SWAT Traffic are never on the top 10 list? Since I own them, I feel it would be a conflict of interest to place it on any of my rankings. (But we all know how great they are anyways lol)

Deep Thoughts – Jon’s Weekly Rambling

The Anti-Sound Brigade

This is a topic that seems to come and go on a monthly basis. Every time a splash page gets a decent amount of rotation, some folks come out of the wood work to complain about sound while surfing the traffic exchanges.

Here’s the deal, we are advertising. In the sea of dull web sites that seem to populate the traffic exchanges, why is an advertiser shunned for using something to spice up their site? Why are people not allowed to ‘grab attention’? This is what we are doing right, advertising?

It’s a funny argument, and something I have never really understood. Especially because the most effective and attention grabbing splash pages, are usually ones with sound or voice…Still, some folks seem to have a problem with this.

I say use whatever you want! If you are seeing good results, use whatever combination you like. If people do not like it, they don’t like it. Nothing you can do about it. But time and time again, sound on splash pages has created some very memorable campaigns.

What are you doing to stick out like a sore thumb?

Yes there are a lot of us who got our start at MPAM. A lot of the people I interact with regularly were met there.

    Wish Michael the best.

Oh, I am not against sound, but some sounds are particularly annoying. I think I did say something about this in the forum, but that was just my rant for the day… We all have them and feel so much better after.. Right Jon?! lol Market Away! I Love it!

Not sure why people bitch about something they have control of.

    Just mute the damn volume!

It amazes me how people waste time bitching about things that are so trivial instead of taking that time to do something productive – LIKE GENERATING TRAFFIC!!!

Good luck to Mr. Russell on his future endeavors.

I do not mind sound, just along as it does not deafen me. Lots of time I have my headset on or speakers on. Sound on a splash is nice to break the boredom of silent.
Some people are also jealious, they think some one will make more than them.

Sad news about MPAM. While I didn’t get my start there I was one of the original members and it saddens me to see such a fine program that pioneered downline building and influenced my Downline program I launched in 2002 http://web.archive.org/web/20021008171907/www.linksrus.net/pages/329290/index.htm

I love sound in splash pages. They are easily my best converting promotions. Just as in popups where if you don’t like them you get a popup blocker with splash pages with sound all you have to do is mute the sound but the campaigns I’ve run prove that very few do that. The only thing better then sound is sound and video!

Personally I don’t like sound. Some pages has very low volume; others, very high. Some voices are pleasant; others, the contrary. I don’t like very high-pitched voices. This is a problem existing also on the sound of TV sets. Turning off the volume control is a very easy path. A constant regulated volume should be nice for many of us.

    Dear Jon,
Sound is a problem because the user of the sound does so very poorly. Second, the average surfer just shuts it off so he does not get blasted by this sound bashing. Users of sound missed the true use of sound. That is sound as a subliminal. A subliminal is sound just above the range of most surfers range of hearing that the surfer is effected by and does not know he is being so. But as sound used today has created the surfer surfs with sound off situation for almost all surfers like my self that listen to sound from an other source while surfing. So as a surfer, sound is not a problem for me because I just do not hear it. The only problem is that with 7 second timers sound just slows the load time of the page. This is even more so for videos. So in reality there should not be a problem here. If you are selling to a target market that is primarily mew people that have yet to come to the point of shutting off the sound then put sound on your site. If your target is not mew people then fast load makes sound not the friend of the marketer.
    Thanks
    warren

The main problem with sound on web or Splash pages, but especially on Splash Pages is simply this. Jon and others keep preaching to us about using Splash Pages on TE’s, but most if not all of us surf with multi-tab browsers like Chrome and Firefox. There’s nothing more awful than the mash we get when different pages are sounding off at the same time, and the natural result is that we turn the speakers off to avoid that noise.

Bigger question is this….if we’re supposed to use Spalsh Pages to grab attention in a very short time, how does the use of sound help that, especially when some of the video inserts are longer than the surf time on some pages?

  10. Posted by Jon Olson 30th May, 2009 at 12:20 pm

Great feedback and comments everyone…As for that last question, I think people need to be creative. Mike Paetzold has a splash where he whispered and said ‘hey you, ya you…..’ it worked…It got me to stop for sure. I think the big thing is to do things that others arent. That means trying different methods of grabbing attention whether it be sound or images or even video…

Got in on this late. SWAT turnaround? I have to chuckle because I thought Jon O. was the man! This should be a warning to people trying to run more than 1 exchange. Dang hard. But if there was one man who could do 2 exchanges right, it would have to be Jon O. Way to know how and when to take action!
