Traffic Splash Gets 100k & I’ve Got A Big Rant
First off, MASSIVE congratulations goes out to Paul Kinder and the entire KRM team. I just got wind that Traffic Splash hit 100,000 members a few hours ago and I’m very excited with that news.
Paul has been a friend and a business partner for years and to see his vision of his empire take shape, I’m honored to spread the word about this amazing milestone.
Congrats sir, Mr. Rash and the entire KRM team…You guys are some of the hardest working people in the business and it’s great to see you reach this plateau!
O.K., warm and fuzzy stuff has been said, now it’s time to rant….
So I’m checking out my account at IMfaceplate and I seem to be bombarded with silly ‘pitches’ in my inbox and they start off something like this…
Hi, I followed you, you should do the same for me and while you are at it check out this (enter generic loser matrix program here)
Seriously?
Folks…This whole social networking thing is not about pitching people. It’s not about sending twenty emails or private messages a day. It’s not about annoying your future potential business partners. It’s about people…
And people (I count as a person sometimes) don’t like to be yelled at and essentially that is what you are doing when you join a social networking site and start throwing links in front of people. Get to know the person. Like an article or two of theirs. Join their mailing list. Comment on blogs. Ask a question.
This takes time. I know, it’s not what most folks want to hear, but it’s the REAL way to build relationships with your lists, your referrals and your social network. Most people won’t follow this advice though and continue to spam their networks, there isn’t much we can do about that but anyone that does want to REALLY embrace the power of this social stuff, I urge you to get to KNOW the people in your circle before you start sending links to them.
Remember, social networking is about people…Treat them like you want to be treated yourself.

Thanks for the kind words Jon – and thanks to all the Happy Splashers who got us this far on our journey!
We ain’t resting on our laurels, yesterday we finished working on our new surfbar that you’ll see in Splash 3.0. It’s a few weeks away yet (no one will ever accuse of throwing out developments too early lol) but still, I can’t wait to let you see. Expect a surprise or three!
Couldn’t agree more re the social marketing spammers btw. Just wondering, how do other people handle that?
I tend to ignore most of them, how about you?
Yes sir, well deserved!
As to your question….Sometimes I ignore. Sometimes I reply, and I try to be nice but what boggles my mind is that it’s still taught in various forms around the net, that it’s acceptable to follow someone and then spam them right away.
Scary.
Yes huge huge congrats to Traffic-Splash… 100 k people is no easy feat!
I just posted on another blog about this topic last night. I’ll share the comment here, just because it’s so fitting.
Amen amen amen! You know, I get tons of followers, and many of those followers send me a default copy/paste message raving about some site or product that has paid them tons and will most definitely pay me millions.
Nothing irks me more. I used to ignore these SPAM messages. Now I have my own default copy/paste response. Feel free to use it as your own

Oh hey *FIRSTNAME*!
Thanks so much for your inspiring message. It’s great to meet you too, and I’m so glad you took the time to get to know me personally.
I’m really great today thanks for asking. Not many people would take time out of their busy day to just say “Hello, I’m *FIRSTNAME*. I just wanted to stop by and let you know you have a lot of useful information. Looking forward to getting to know you.”
Have a great day *FIRSTNAME* and please join the program below. It’s made me millions of dollars and I spend all my time now drinking on the beach and riding horses into the sunset!

I leave everything as is. I don’t change the name at all. It is kind of condescending I suppose… but so is spamming someone you’ve never even spoken to all your links.
I’m so glad you posted about this topic! I think we can all learn something from it
Ha ha ha ha Winter.
Those auto follow things in Twitter I find annoying as well, even though they have kind of disappeared lately but my goodness…I mean just take a few days to get to know someone, exchange war stories, post a blog comment, something…
Instead of just firing a link and demanding things…Just rude IMO
When I follow someone like you, the LAST thing I expect is for you to follow me. I’m not following people just so they will follow me. That’s dumb. LOL IF and that’s a big IF I were to have something valuable for you, then ok. But until then, uh uh. Don’t expect it.
Take care,
Donna
I would like to add my “congrats” to the entire KRM team.
It is always a pleasure to see things done right! Gives us all something to aim for… well done!
Jon, you took the words right outta my mouth…
I guess it would follow though, that the same folks who don’t know how to market anything to anybody… wouldn’t know how to nurture and grow a soial network.
I wonder if they have any friends?
Sad, actually…
Carl Bailey
Instant Splash
Donna – Amen to that. I think the exact same way. I follow people I WANT to, not because I expect something in return….
Carl – It is. But it’s not hard to do this stuff. I mean it’s almost human nature. To meet and greet others. It’s just online instead of face to face.
I agree… it only takes about 2 minutes or less to just say “Your page is awesome. I know I’ll learn some great things from it, so I had to follow you. Have a great week!”
You never know how much you might have in common with someone if you don’t take the time to learn something about them. If people buy from people they know and like, how will you ever sell if no one knows you and definitely doesn’t like you?
Oh well… more friends and business for us I say.
Congratulations, Paul! What a milestone and the most excellent Splash deserves every accolade for it! Woohoo!
Definitely congrats to Paul and team for the milestone! I’m upgraded there, as I am at all of your sites Jon, and it’s great doing business with people who work hard to excel.
As for the spammers in IM faceplate… I’ve gotten marriage proposals from overseas, in addition to the one’s described. And, to top it off… every time I click *block this person* I get a page not found error, which is also frustrating, lol.
Congrats to Paul, Tim and the entire KRM team!
Hey Jon, I’m with you buddy. I shouted my sentiments on that one at IMFaceplate. I’m sure some people saw that. LOL.
Have a great weekend everybody.
Jimmy Adames
Hey Jon!
Thank you for the kind words! It is always nice to get mentioned
Thank you!
Tim Rash
Tim, man you are the glue that holds it all together sir LOL Glad I could mention your achievement today. It’s a pretty big deal!
James / Jimmy – You feel my pain then LOL Sad that I’m not the only one dealing with this stuff. Problem I think is that it’s welcomed in some areas of internet marketing. =(
Wow Congratulations Paul Kinder and rest of the Team you guys are simply awesome. My Journey on the Traffic Exchanges started from Traffic-Splash and I still am surfing the site with the rest of the Super Surf sites every week.
I hope to see some Huge New Contest in the Celebration and Keep Growing this massive Traffic Exchange.
Thanks Jon for letting us know about this Your blog posts are always Great and keep us updated as usual.
First off us a fellow traffic exchange owner I want to say awesome Milestone Paul on reaching 100 thousand members I personally can’t wait to reach this milestone myself and I’m working on it daily.
As for the comment about what to do with the network spam I mostly like yourself hit the delete button unless it’s a link to a blog then I see if it’s worth reading. However this blog wow a must read everyday. Jon Olson Rocks and this blog post today hits the nail on the head.
Thanks Haroon, Thanks Monty….Much appreciated!
Congratulations Paul and the team.
How do you delete these people from twitter they do not
just do it once a day but 30 or 40 times. I can never find
friends for them.
Most joined in my first week and I followed them out of politeness .
Not any more all sites get a good check before I follow. If it is a company name I do not even bother to look just block them.
The only time I have ever used a URL on facebook was when trying to explain to old friends who do not work on line what I do.
One thing I like about Buzz is you can unfollow imediately.
I am tired of creating new Twitter accounts, email accounts, accounts, accounts…because of spammers. I know I did my time as a heavy link poster, and I learned. Thankfully, at that time I was basically posting to posters. It was a Twitter thing. I became annoyed. Started to be more choosy. Now I have a personal Twitter account and I follow who I like. There are a lot of great bloggers out there, and I like to be reminded to read them. I am not affiliated these days with anyone except a local guitar shop I work for and so I have no need to spam. Not even if I wanted to do so.
Facebook has never really been a problem because I generally only friend people I know in the tangible world. There are exceptions, but trust has been built first.

People need to realize you have one chance to make a lasting impression. You need to great people and talk to them as a friend and as someone who is honest with helping them out.
When you treat people with respect and get to know them and they get to know you first pushing a sale later on is easy and is not so spammy as to chase the person away. Help them out even if it takes up your time. Generally people will remember what you did for them and start following you and your advice you give in your emails later on.
Congratulation Paul and crew for your milestone. The Splasher has been my favorite TE for as long as I’ve been surfing.
Winter, your message is hilarious. Do you ever get a response or an apology from the spammer after they get your message? Probably not likely, I’ll admit.
Jon, I almost wish you had done a separate post about the spammers, something like “Why is my Face being bombarded with silly pitches?” The ones on IM Faceplate that need to get the message won’t know that your “Big Rant” is about them.
I totally agree, this is why the whole social networks based around income building are moot to me. The target audience of sites like Swom and IM Faceplate are people trying to build income in affiliate programs, because they themselves are affiliate programs.. and thus it really is some people’s life line to make money with these programs so they are inherently going to advertise them to you on there, faceplate isn’t as bad as Swom yet, but it will be as popularity grows..
I have accounts on those sites as part of my branding strategy and so people who want to find me can, but I don’t take stock in or really keep up on those type of sites.
